Uber vs. Taxi Comparison

This is taken from CTV Kitchener  http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/video?binId=1.1147261
and also from 570news radio  http://www.570news.com/2015/07/24/uber-vs-taxi-570-news-does-the-comparison/
I only have to say that the tip part I don't understand.  It's a service industry, taxis, she didn't need to give a tip.  But, most likely appreciated by the driver for sure.  I thought they said it's 25% cheaper than a taxi ride.  Chalk up another lie to Uber!

What is the diffence - Taxi vs. Uber

An Ontario judge ruled that Uber is not a taxi broker.  I have to say he's a complete idiot.  It's like saying that taxi broker are just radio dispatch companies.  We both have internet services. Computer servers and staff.  The real difference you can talk to a real person with a taxi company.  Oh, Uber has a app!!! Really !! We in the industry didn't think of that.  Please.  If we had the money like Uber, don't you think we wouldn't have a better app.  And it would be better than Uber's model.  With them you must have a card.  Really, what about the people don't have a card or don't want one.  The elderly who don't like smartphones.

Waterloo Taxi has been in the business close to 70 years.  We run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No exception.  If we had the power to change your rates whenever we see fit. Like friday nights when everyone goes out around 10pm. Or holidays when owners or drivers should get a better rate than the standard rate.  That judge is a narrow minded in thinking that Uber is just app company.  They get 25% of every transaction.  That's makes them a broker.  Calling on a landline, cell phone, using a computer or even a app.  That's how most taxi service work today.  Uber is limited to a app.

Uber - app unlicensed taxi broker using unlicensed taxis, unverified safety check on vehicles and criminal checks on drivers.

Taxi - licensed taxi broker - licensed taxis, government verified safety checks on vehicles with surprise inspections by regional by-law officers.  Verified criminal checks and driver's abstracts record, every year.

Correcting misconception of Taxi licenses in the Waterloo Region

In The Record newspaper on January 31, 2015. I quote "Right now a cabbie could sell his ownership license for about $300,000.  They're valued because so few are available."  Is not true.  The real value is not license per se but the years that these companies are in business.  Reputation of that company.  Example: a mom and pop coffee shop vs.  Tim Horton's which one would you buy.   New Hamburg Taxi don't even come close to $300,000.  Why?  Simple, no real value in that company.  No radio dispatch or regular hours and they are a regional taxi company. The cost of running a taxi company is huge. That's why the region choose the best taxi system.  A brokerage in which every taxi owner is part owner of that brokerage. There is not just one person that owes the taxi company or brokerage.  The companies or brokerage are not there to make a profit for shareholders like Uber.  Every owner pays fees or rent to cover the costs of running the business.  Like paying staff wages, property taxes, equipment and license fees of radio, cellular data and a lot more.  Also they provide jobs and opportunities for people to make a living.  And the taxi is the only way a taxi owner can make a income.

So, a new license is given to a company you think any person should have the right to come in to establish business without paying something or know the industry.  I wish that was true. I would walk into a Tim Horton's and say I'm a part owner.  Plus, we take great pride in choosing someone in becoming a owner in our company.  Not someone off the street. Someone who hasn't put their time in a taxi.  So, that they can become responsible owner.  Where we can improve our service for the public.

Uber started in 2009. It has grown to become one of the largest transportation provider service companies in the world.  But, how they did it has put the world on it's ear.  Yes, they have a fancy app, and soon we'll have one also.  It works great in a lot of under service areas.  What they are is providing a taxi service without regulations or government oversight.  Where taxis for decades have been regulated for fairness and safety.  Uber moved into the Waterloo Region without any care of what effects it would do to the industry or their customers in Waterloo Region.

The taxi industry is still recovering from lost of customers do the region's decision on giving all universities students subsides bus passes (which were made mandatory by the universities).  There was no discussion with the industry. To see if there was going to be any consequences to it, and there was.

I quote from the same article "Taking a taxi isn't cheap.  The cost of five-kilometre cab ride here was fourth-highest out of 19 Ontario municipalities at $14.00, according to regional report in 2011."  Too bad she couldn't do some real research on taxi industry in the province or even in the region. We would have been if the proposal went to the taxi association way. And if all other municipalities didn't get a increase also.  But, the taxi association didn't get what they wanted.  Oh, that would have been the first increase in 4 years and the HST start in July of 2010, which the 8 percent of the GST was absorbed by the industry in the region.  There should have been increase in 2010 but the region decided that we would get a break from the Ontario government.  RIGHT!

So the next time you really want to know how the taxi industry really works in the Region of Waterloo.  Ask your taxi driver or a regional by-law officer.

This blog is response to miss information of the Taxi industry in the Region of Waterloo.

Thank you all for reading this blog.

UBER is hurting my friends and me !!!

It's Sunday, the first weekend of Uber starting in the region of Waterloo.  Drivers on the weekend average $4.00 an hour.  All because Uber gave away free rides.  So, that they can make a good impression with the community.  Hundreds of families relying on incomes from the taxi industry just got hurt!  How's it fair that I and my fellow taxi drivers. Where we pay our taxi fees and taxes, can be stepped on by one company that's not part of this community.
The look of despair on my driver's face after working a whole weekend. Making less than half of minimum wage. What can I do against a company that worth over 40 billion dollars.  How can I survive this onslaught.  I'm really at a lost. I know that the taxi industry in the Region of Waterloo is one of the best! How do I know this.  Simple, driving for 22 years.  Customers from all over the world that have visit this Region have said so! Fast, and affordable rates.
Uber has hurt our community more than it has helped!  Now, I have to figure out wants next for me and my family!

UBER has illegally started in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Now, you hear from the "cartel".  We're not a billion company. Just a small company with little capital to fight against this machine.  The facts that are true for the region of Waterloo.  5 companies work in the region.  Each company has a central dispatch office.  With people working and making a living. Paying licence fee, property taxes, and all the other fees to run a business. We can not compete against them.  Because. we don't have the resource to generate a income of that magnitude.

Also, they take away from the region.  No money stays in Canada.  All that money goes to one person in the states. This will hurt all the people in the industry.  I can vouch that the taxi industry in the region is one of the best.  But, people will argue the point.  The big picture is that it will hurt your neighbour.  It even might but people out of work.  That's what's on my mind.  Hopefully, people of the Region of Waterloo will see how it will affect their local economy.  UBER (Big USA company) hurting the local taxi industry and community.

UBER!!!!

OK !!! UBER is coming to the Waterloo Region.  Thanks to all people that want UBER !
I'm here to say.  Good Luck !!

Facts of taxi industry in the Waterloo Region.

  1.  Every cab out there is own by a owner/operator not by the company.  The company is owned by all the owner/operators.

  2.  Heavily regulate industry. (fares, safety, insurance, and advertisements)

  3.  Fares - regulate by the region. Taxi companies have some input into the rate, but the usually the region has the last word.

  4.  Safety - MTO (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario) safety inspection done yearly, police check done yearly, 3 random inspection by the region a year. Random inspection done by the Waterloo taxi inspection team.

  5.  Insurance - Commercial insurance (able to drive people around for a fee).  Mandate 5 million dollar liability insurance.

  6.  Advertisement - One way to generate income to offset cost. But, its heavily regulate by region.

  7. 24/7, 365.  That's right we're 24 hours and 7 days a weeks.  Even in the worst condition, where bus service is pulled off the roads. You can still call for a taxi. ( it won't be there in the usual 5 minutes, but you will get one)

  8. WE DO NOT DISCRIMINATE!  We drive everyone!

People who want to use UBER. It's your choice.  Just remember that your stepping in a vehicle that will not be properly insured.  Taking away jobs from the local economy.  Taking money a from region (fees, taxes, and wages).  Your just hurting your neighbour.  People that invest their money in the industry.  A office with a call center.  Real staff!  People that are employed from the region.

UBER - said that uber drivers will make more money then some taxi drivers.  Part-time drivers in the region usually make 40% of the fare (no hourly wages).  They don't pay for gas or insurance or any other fee.  Where UBER drivers lose 25% of the fare. Pay for gas, maintenance and hopefully the proper insurance.  I don't see it. But I do see how UBER is Billion dollar company.  Just steamrolling over everyone.  Ignoring people safety. The law and regulations.  I don't understand how people say it a great service.  When they are a OUTLAW service!  Answering to no one.

In the newspaper today (The Record) someone call my industry in the region corrupt. How in the hell are we corrupt?  Please explain this?

That's all for now! But, I will be posting more.
